Bruce Cochrane is a graduate of the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design (BFA, 1976) and the prestigious Alfred University, (MFA, 1978). Bruce has consistently produced functional pottery while teaching at Sheridan College School of Crafts and Design in Oakville, Ontario, Canada and participating in ceramic exhibitions internationally. He is respected for his sensitive manipulation of clay and firing processes evident in his robust serving wares, as well as for his abilities as a teacher.
He has travelled extensively to see first-hand collections and ceramic sites in England, Portugal, Italy, and China, and has worked seriously with earthenware, stoneware and porcelain for extended periods in a practice informed by his travel studies.
Bruce has had nine solo shows and exhibited internationally in twenty-three exhibitions since 1989. His work has been published in several magazines and more than ten books on ceramics. In 2000 he became a member of the International Academy of Ceramics, and in 2001 he was a finalist for the important Saidye Bronfman Award for Crafts.
His pottery is held in the collections of the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, the George R. Gardiner Museum of Ceramic Art, Toronto, the Musée du Québec, Québec City, the Kansas City Art Institute, Kansas City, the Nova Scotia Art Gallery, Halifax, The Museum of Civilization, Gatineau and other prestigious private and public collections.
Bruce Cochrane maintains a studio in Mississauga, Ontario where he lives with his wife and two children, while teaching ceramics at Sheridan College.
