"My own home and land affirm my identity.  They are local and regional markers that affect my perceptions of my place within a larger sphere.  We all move through our own landscapes, among the people, places, objects and images that we are familiar with and with which we have become comfortable.  In a sense, we lay claim to them and we cherish the illusion that they are our own.  In the process, they become cloaked in a complex network of personal associations.  Comfortable with our own landscapes, we may render them invisible except for the occasional fleeting glimpse that pulls an otherwise familiar object, image or vista into precise focus and grants us the clarity and wonder to see them as if for the first time.  The images in 'home   land' evolved from those moments that locate me in my own specific
place and time.  They attempt to connect to the physical and suggest relationships which exist outside of the familiar. "
Pellettier, 2002

We are pleased to present our fourth solo exhibition of paintings by Toronto Island artist
Tery Pellettier. This recent body of work builds very nicely on her previous paintings as Tery continues an exploration of her home and landscape around Ontario as subject matter.

This terse new body of work is even more effectively reduced and subtle than in previous exhibitions.
Tery's quiet palette and sparse use of the picture plane is strongly evident in these pictures, a device that has become a trademark of her pared down style. Her sensitive use of acrylic on paper, or acrylic on panel has garnered her work a strong following over the years.
Tery has matured as an artist. She has evolved from her painted and dyed silk work of the eighties, which were precious and meticulous, into a gutsy and confident creator of very compelling and intriguing images. Her painted world has the ability to shift in and out of reality through the thoughtful use of her well-honed skill.

Featured works such as
'Canadian Bow', 'I'm Not Home', and a number of small boat/water paintings are condensed images from trips taken in the past year or two around Ontario, while 'Bed', 'Bakelite Fork I', and 'Bakelite Fork with Measuring Cup' capture carefully edited objects at home. Wherever Pellettier travels or resides she is always storing images and ideas (like a diary) that will eventually rise to her consciousness and make their way into her painting. This exhibition will not disappoint but will allow us to share her unique world-view that is captured in a rather splendid and special manner.
