Montréal-based artist Richard Milette mines the rich historical Greek ceramic tradition for his 11th solo show. In this meticulous body of work he has joined his interest in ceramics and the history of European painting, uniting the two disparate traditions of art and craft to create objects of intelligent beauty.
Working with a true to life-size Greek hydria form as a structure/ground, Richard has painted with glaze, same-size details from 16th to 18th century paintings in a rectangle format on the surface which relates to the medallion placement on the ceramic precedents he cites in his work. Overlapping images, cultures and issues makes for a rewarding viewer experience.
Richard graduated from NSCAD (BFA, 1983) and has been working consistently resulting in an extensive body of work that has been exhibited in 10 solo and 91 group exhibitions. Individual collectors Adrian Sassoon (England), Karen Johnson Boyd (USA), Sonny & Gloria Kamm (USA), and Barbara Silverberg (Canada) are amongst the supporters of this incredible artist. The Royal Ontario Museum, The Gardiner Museum of Ceramic Art, the Musée du Quebec, and the Mint Museum of Art are some of the prestigious public holders of his works.
Milette's sculptures of pots included in Pots and Paints are volumetric yet capable of only containing ideas. They captivate a general audience with their sheer magnificence and operate at a brainy level of sophistication that will appeal to painting and ceramics cognoscente.
