Lynne McIlvride Evans (B.F.A., York University, 1985) has the need to fill her constructed and painted worlds with an abundance of colour, figures, shapes, and stories. Hers is a unique view of the world and all the wonders it holds.
Lynne lives and works in the countryside of Uxbridge, Ontario. It is there, away from the frenetic city life, that she builds and paints her work, work that is highly original and influenced and fed by her strong Christian values and beliefs. There is a studied naiveté to her work but they are by no means naïve. Careful and close examination of the paintings provides a glimpse into her mind and reveals the joy in her spirituality. Truly the works are a wonderful testament to her creativity and conviction.
Labyrinths, tiled floors and elaborate stained glass windows have emerged as major sources in her new body of work and are on a nice big but houseable scale. These are veritible journeys in themselves and are a delight to puzzle as you move your way through the visual pilgrimage she presents.
Gary Michael Dault in his review from her last exhibition at Prime Gallery in 2000 felt that her paintings "would seem perfectly in place in Frida Kahlo's kitchen…". An apt description of the effortless vitality and life that appears in each and every work. The new paintings by Lynne McIlvride Evans are not to be missed!
