recent ceramics and works on paper
October 31 - November 23, 2002

Conestoga, Ontario based Ann Roberts (M.A., Claremont College, 1980) is a ceramic sculptor who has had an active career since 1962; from 1977 - 2001 she was a professor of fine art at the University of Waterloo.  Ann has had 15 solo shows, participated in 124 group exhibitions and completed 8 specially commissioned works.  Her figurative ceramics appear in the public collections of the Museum of Civilization, Gatineau, the Burlington Art Centre, Burlington, the Museum of Decorative Arts, Prague, and the Jingdezhen Ceramic Institute Museum, China.  In the summer of 2002, Ann presented a site-specific installation for the courtyard of the Burlington Art Centre.

Figures have long been the subject matter of the sculptures by
Ann Roberts.  This new body of work is figurative but is actually about relationships and interdependency not body parts.  Full, sensual, some what aged or timeless images of relationships are sculpted in clay for the three dimensional pieces, or drawn using mixed media on paper for the two dimensional works.  In each case the viewer is confronted with their own relationships as they study the pieces in the exhibition.

In the making of this wonderful body of work
Ann Roberts has drawn on the common ground shared by humans and animals in their struggle for survival in their interaction as part of the greater primal life force.  Her realization of that battle in these pieces is the culmination of a long rich career, and we are pleased to be offering it to you here at Prime Gallery.
