Ontario based Susan Rankin has been steadily building an international reputation for her blown glass works since she began her studies of the medium at Pilchuk Glass School in 1984. Her lively voluptuous vessels wrapped in vines, leaves and flowers have been shown in 16 solo exhibitions across North America in many of the most prestigious venues for contemporary glass. Rankin has work included in public collections at the Winnipeg Art Gallery, Corning Museum, Claridge Collection, UBS, as well as in many fine private collections.
For her current exhibition 'Wired Vessels', Rankin has reduced the intensely coloured opaque glass vase forms to their most elemental and surrounded each with an metal framework reminiscent of basketry. The framework creates a landscape in which the vase lives, defining and revealing the object and it at the same time casting shadows that act as a drawing of the entire piece.
References to history, nature and architecture found in the 'Wired Vessels' make for a rich viewing experience that goes well beyond the magic of Susan Rankin's finely crafted pieces.
